About the Artist

Mary Susan is a storyteller. As a child she somehow convinced her classmates to abandon recess each day to gather ‘round her (sitting in a semi-circle in the grass) while she stood above them and recalled stories from children’s books and classic fairytales (many arm gestures included)- to date this is still one of her greatest accomplishments. Later, as a middle school teacher she encouraged her students to explore their creativity by offering a single line of a story and letting them each fill in the setting, characters, and plot twists. After entering motherhood, inspired by her daughter with cerebral palsy, she completed her doctorate in special education- relying on research, facts, but most importantly stories from mothers in similar boats. Today, on her 5 star, Mama Bear Podcast, she shares the stories of fellow women raising children in extreme circumstances, and in her art, she does the same thing she loved doing as a middle school teacher, starting a story and letting someone else complete it. Imagination is the pathway to mystery, fun, and exploration. She hopes her abstract art makes the collector hop into a tale that may feel familiar or perhaps zip them off into make-believe.
